Picture this: you’ve battled through a long workday, and all you want to do is kick back and relax.
But hold on tight, because here comes a reality smack in the face.
Just when you thought your “other job” was over, you’re hit with the dreaded question, “What’s for dinner, MOM?”
Can’t they just survive on cereal and takeout for a week?
Alas, the answer is no.
Ah, the struggle is real. Your professional routine is on point, but now it’s time to conquer the dinner routine.
Let’s tackle the first order of business: clutter. We all dream of having a serene and tranquil kitchen, but let’s face it, clutter has a way of creeping up on us. Just like hunting for that memo you urgently needed in a messy office, or the search for car keys when you’re already running behind schedule, the frustration of searching for minced garlic can be equally infuriating. In order to be cooking with ease and speed, you need to be planning, prepping and cooking in an environment where you know what you have and where it is! Let’s banish the chaos and bring order to your kitchen kingdom.
Here’s the battle plan:
Step One: Start With One Area At A Time.
Decluttering the entire kitchen might seem as daunting as climbing Mount Everest in heels. So, let’s break it down and start with one area at a time.
Maybe begin with the cabinets, drawers, or even the refrigerator. By dividing and conquering, you’ll make progress faster than a speeding bullet. It won’t overwhelm you, and you’ll experience the satisfying joy of checking off tasks along the way.
Heck, you can even spread it out over a few days if that makes it more bearable. Rome wasn’t built in a day, right?
Step 2: Organize Items By Frequency Of Use.
Let’s get strategic. Organizing your items based on how often you use them will save you from unnecessary kitchen gymnastics.
The essentials—like cooking utensils—should be easily accessible, almost like your own personal cheering squad.
Keep the plates and cutlery you use regularly on lower shelves, reserving the top shelf for fancy-schmancy special occasion dining ware. Group similar items together to create harmony. Bakeware gets its designated spot, and pots and pans should be as close to the stove as your favorite sous chef. Efficiency, my friend!
Step Three: Organize Your Kitchen Counters.
It’s time to assess the countertop situation. Say goodbye to any rubbish you find and gather the survivors into groups. Are there appliances hogging precious space that you hardly ever use?
Has your ice cream maker and bread machine set up permanent residence on your precious counter? Show them the exit and find a cozy spot in your laundry room or garage. Let’s reserve prime countertop real estate for the appliances that earn their keep, the ones you use several times a week. They deserve the spotlight.
Trust me, your countertops will thank you.
Step Four: Organize Your Utensils.
We’re all guilty of collecting utensils and gadgets like magpies with shiny objects. But when they all mingle together, it’s like searching for a needle in a haystack.
Let’s restore order.
Give your daily utensils their own drawer, a place of honor. You can even grab some cutlery dividers to keep them in line. Once you’ve sorted the essentials, it’s time to address the non-essentials. I’m looking at you avocado slicer and cherry pitters! They can find a new home in a separate drawer or cabinet, or if you’re feeling rebellious, corral them in a jug or container on the countertop.
Utensil organization, achieved!
Step Five: Organize Your Pantry, Fridge, and Freezer.
Now, this is a beast of a task. We could write a whole encyclopedia on it, but let’s stick to the basics for now.
Begin by bidding farewell to any expired food items. Goodbye, old buddies.
Next, look for food items that have been open for a while and may be stale. Open cereals and spices lose flavor over time. Just say so long to them as well.
Arrange what’s left in categories (e.g. baking, canned food, grains, spices, marinades, etc.). Have all bottles and containers upright with their labels visible.
It’s like Marie Kondo-ing your kitchen!
Of course, this is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. We all know it takes more than an organized office to be a successful business woman. Oh, if it were that easy! Likewise, starting with an organized kitchen is just the first step to regaining your dinner time sanity. You not only need to know what you have (and where it is!), but also what you need and how to use it.
