Bored with your weeknight dinner routine?

Tired of eating the same old same old served with a side dish of lackluster dinner conversation?

Often times, making dinner can feel like a chore. We all know being a busy mom is no easy task, and sometimes, coming up with new and exciting dinner ideas can feel like a DAUNTING task. And your family wants it EVERY night! SHEESH…the nerve.

But what if you could make dinner fun, enjoyable and easy?

What if we told you that you could base your meal plans on some of your favorite songs about food?

It may seem a little unconventional, but it can be a fun way to get creative in the kitchen while introducing your family to new and exciting dishes. It’s time to put back the pep in your step and kiss those dinner time blues goodbye.

Which Comes First? The Dinner Menu or the Music?

There really is no right or wrong answer to this question. Easy weekinght dinners are meant to be fun and… well, easy.

Do any food songs come to mind?

Is there a certain food lingering in your fridge that needs to be cooked before it turns into a science experiment? That would be a good place to start.

Is there a new recipe you’ve been longing to try? Can you think of a song lyric that mentions that item? If yes, your dinner is almost done!

Be flexible and creative in your meal planning. Songs can be based on your kid’s favorite songs or some good old rock and roll. It’s your dinner. You make the rules.

Dinner Ideas Based On Food Titles

Here are a few song-inspired dinner ideas to get you started.

“Sugar, Sugar” by The Archies.

This classic tune is all about sweetness, so why not whip up a dessert-inspired dinner? Think glazed ham with honey roasted carrots, or a sweet and spicy chicken stir-fry with pineapple and peppers.

“Peaches” by The Presidents of the United States of America.

This catchy tune is all about the deliciousness of peaches, so why not create a peach-themed dinner? Start with a fresh peach salad, move on to a grilled peach and goat cheese pizza, and finish with a peach cobbler for dessert.

Breakfast for dinner is always and unexpected treat.

Think “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson or the “Banana Song” sung by those adorable Minions.

These tunes are all about taking it easy and enjoying the simple things in life. Take a cue from the song and whip up some banana pancakes for dinner. Serve them with crispy bacon and fresh fruit for a balanced and delicious meal.

Cheeseburger in Paradise” by Jimmy Buffett.

This classic tune is all about the joy of a good burger. Create your own cheeseburger in paradise by grilling up juicy burgers with all the fixings. Serve them with sweet potato fries and a tropical drink for a truly relaxing meal.

Tacos” by Little Big.

If it’s Tuesday, odds are you’re thinking taco. Why not shake things up a bit and serve a type of taco you don’t ordinarily make? Think fish, shrimp, chicken, pork, tempeh or spicy tofu tacos. Of course, salsa and guacamole are always welcome on the side.

Sweet Potato Pie” by James Taylor.

This soulful tune is all about the comforting goodness of a sweet potato pie. Why not create a dinner inspired by this classic dessert? Start with sweet potato soup, move on to sweet potato gnocchi, and finish with a slice of sweet potato pie for dessert.

Hot Potato” by The Wiggles.

This catchy children’s song is perfect for a fun and interactive dinner. Make baked potatoes and set out a variety of toppings such as cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, and chives. Hot potatoes are also great stuffed with leftover taco meat or shredded chicken. Let everyone build their own “hot potato” just the way they like it

Rock Lobster” by the B- 52’s.

Feeling a little extravagant? Boil, broil or grill up some lobsters. They cook up really quick. Then grab some lobster bibs and let’s get the party started. Make your lobsters the ultimate, decadent finger food for the night.

Strawberry Fields Forever” by The Beatles.

This iconic song about strawberries can inspire a sweet and summery dinner featuring fresh strawberries in every course. Consider serving a strawberry and spinach salad, grilled chicken with strawberry salsa, and finishing off with a strawberry shortcake.

Chicken Fried” by Zac Brown Band.

Do you find yourself always making chick the same way and wondering why no one is enthusiastic about sitting around the dinner table? Just say no! It’s easy to incorporate a variety of chicken dinners in your weeknight recipe rotation. Why not whip up some buffalo or teriyaki chicken wings, California chicken club pizza, cajun, Moroccan or bbq chicken? Try Filipino chicken adobo, chicken chiles rellenos alfredo, fajitas, tiki masala, chicken and pesto stuffed peppers…the possibilities are endless. Go for it!

On Top Of Spaghetti” by Tom Glazer.

Who can forget this classic? Why not jazz up  your pasta with a creative sauce? Instead of your tried and true plain tomato sauce, think pesto, alfredo, arrabiatta, cacio e pepe (sheep’s milk cheese and black pepper), bechamel or vodka sauce.

What To Play At Your Dinner Table

The fun doesn’t have to stop with coming up with your song inspired dinner menu.

When serving your meal, have your family guess the musical theme or figure out the inspiring song.

Play a musical food game where you go around the table and everyone needs to sing a line from a song, tv jingle or nursery rhyme that contains a reference to food (hint: this is a great way to gather intel for your next music-food themed dinner!). Keep the songs flowing until everyone runs out of ideas.

Make a playlist of food themed songs and play it during dinner. Even better if a dance party breaks out during the main course.

There’s no time like the present to start cooking up some meal time memories.
